“Murderer of the Year” brings you behind the scenes of an investigation and trial that rocked the small, upscale borough of Metuchen, New Jersey.
Neighbors and friends are shocked when Gene Berta, a married man with children, captain of the rescue squad, a man named “Man of the Year” multiple times for his life-saving work, is accused of brutally murdering Catherine Neal Warner, a pretty, petite 29-year-old nurse with whom he’d been having an on-again affair for 10 years.
Warner’s body had been discovered by her father and brother, decaying in a tub in her house. She had been shot once in the head and her body left for a week in the hot summer heat before it was found.
Detectives from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office immediately began to piece together the puzzle that would eventually lead them to Berta: disparate items such as a daily calendar and Warner’s wrist watch. Along the way, the detectives uncovered the secret steamy life Berta led behind closed doors; one filled with sex and whispers about Berta’s possible connections to the underworld.
“Murderer of the Year” takes you into Warner’s home when detectives make the startling discovery that leads to Berta’s arrest, and into the courtroom for the bombshell revelation that seals his fate.
